Coogan, 64... 19 JUN 2004 NEWBURGH - Cecelia Coogan, 75, of Newburgh, passed on Wednesday, June 16, 2004, after a lingering illness. She was a retired nurse and parishoner of Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh. Born Cecelia Casserly in Emlagh, County Roscommon, Ireland, she received a nursing license at St. Patrick's Hospital School of Nursing, in Dublin, and emigrated to the United States shortly thereafter. She was employed by the Yonkers Professional Hospital, Yonkers and Highland/St. Francis Hospital, Beacon, where she received honors for Outstanding Performance in her field, was recognized as Employee of the Year. She is survived by her husband, James M. Coogan of Yonkers; a daughter, Mary E. Coogan of Yonkers; a son, James J. Coogan of Manhattan; a sister, Mary Gleason of Croton-on- Hudson; a nephew, Michael Casserly of Tallahassee, Fla.; nieces, Dr. Geraldine Cannon of Cove Creek, Ariz., Mary Casserly of Philadelphia, Pa., Patricia Fernandez of Putnam Valley, Eileen Twomey of Long Island, N.J., Evelyn Winters of Philadelphia, Pa., and Maureen Gannon-Murray of Yonkers. She is further survived by numerous cousins in the United States and Ireland. She has been predeceased by her sister, Bridget Gannon, and brothers Michael and John Casserly. Coogan, 89, a resident of the Town of Beekman for 13 years, formerly of Flushing, died at home on Thursday, July 16, 2009. For more than 30 years, James served as a courier for Railway Express in Sunnyside. He later worked as a lineman for Amtrak until retiring in 1978. He was a member of St. Denis Church in Hopewell Junction. Born in Manhattan on February 10, 1920, he was the son of the late Terrence and Loretta Coogan. James graduated from Cathedral Boys' High School in Manhattan and in 1943 was inducted into the U.S. Navy. He served during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. On April 16, 1944, he married Agnes Doorty at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Corona. Mrs. Coogan predeceased him on November 25, 2006. James is survived by two sons, Kevin Coogan & his wife Susan of Cheshire, CT and Barry Coogan & his wife Carol of Middle Village; two daughters, Robin Laurita & her husband Dominic of LaGrangeville and Barbara DiTrolio & her husband Dino of Old Tappan, NJ; 11 grandchildren, Kathleen, Danny Jennifer, Jeff, Kelly, Patricia, Catherine, Dominic, Lauren, Amanda, and Kaitlin; six great-grandchildren, Jake, Emma, Conner, Kevin, Abby, and Molly; two sisters, Eleanor Pipia & her husband Tony and Anna Camp, both of Long Island; also many nieces and nephews. He was born in Yonkers, NY to James and Cecelia Coogan on February 2, 1965, and was raised in Beacon. He attended St Joachim Elementary School and Beacon High School. He was a leading expert in the cheese industry, and a proud member of the Guilde des Fromagers. He worked as the cheese buyer at Eli's Manhattan Food Market up until his death, as well as several other prestigious food establishments throughout Manhattan over the years. He started his career in the food industry at the New World Deli in Wappingers Falls. He will be missed dearly by his wife Bambi Ray, a Sales Manager at Astor Wines & Spirits in Manhattan, his sister Mary E Coogan, brother-in-law Bruce Foley, and his many cousins, friends, and colleagues throughout the country and the world.
