Benedict died at 5:11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1993, at Proctor Hospital. Born Nov. 10, 1900, in Lincoln to John T. and Anna Shoub Elwood, she married Lawrence B. Coogan on Feb. 18, 1930, in St. Louis. He died in March 1953. She also was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Surviving are one son, Patrick of Chillicothe; three grandchildren; and three nieces. She was an employee of the recorder of deeds office in Lincoln for many years. She worked at the Peoria County Courthouse for 16 years in both the county and circuit clerks' offices, retiring as a deputy circuit clerk in 1969. Born Oct. 24, 1940, in Peoria to Lawrence B. and Mildred C. Elwood Coogan, he married Janet M. Reising on July 10, 1971, in Chillicothe. She survives. Also surviving are one son, Timothy, and two daughters, Colleen and Molly Coogan, all at home. He majored in mechanical engineering at Bradley University. He worked at Catepillar Inc. for 29 years, last working in the transmission business unit in East Peoria. He was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church in Chillicothe, where he served on the parish council. He coached girls basketball at St. Edward's School and girls softball in Rome. Mary Jane earned her Ph.D. in English from Loyola University in Chicago, master's from S.L.U. and bachelor's from Clarke College. She retired after teaching for more than 30 years at Wells and Lane Tech high schools in Chicago. She also retired from working in the baby department at the downtown Marshall Field's store. Of herself, Mary Jane said simply in the family history, The Coogan Croinic, "I am an English Teacher in the Chicago Public Schools, where I have been since 1954. I am thankful for the many good things I have had in my life and hope that I can, in a small way, repay kindnesses I have received, by passing them along to others." Mary Jane loved when her nieces and nephews and their children would visit her at Marshall Field's and she could shower them with clothes, lunch and her own special kindness. She loved her extended family and set an example of unconditional love that will serve as her legacy. COOGAN (1930 - 2017) - PEORIA - Paul Matthew Coogan, age 87, of Peoria, Illinois, passed away Friday, September 22, 2017, at Lutheran Hillside Village. Born August 26, 1930, in Peoria, Illinois, to Paul M. Coogan and Elizabeth Shields Coogan, he grew up on the corner of Wisconsin and Nebraska, with his 6 siblings, Jim, Anne, Mary Jane, Virginia, Katie and Phil, along with Trella and Mabel Foster, who joined the family in 1930 to assist their mother in raising a family. Paul attended St. Bernard's School and Parish, Spalding and University of Notre Dame, Harvard University (Business Program) and Bradley University. In 1957, he met Joanne Jordan in the Jefferson Building while she was working for Dr. Canterbury. According to Paul, the best choice he ever made was marrying Joanne. They married on October 18, 1958, at St. Cecilia's in Peoria. Paul is survived by his wife, Joanne A. Coogan of Peoria; and their 5 children, Daniel (Joanna Norick) Coogan of Tubac, Arizona, Bridget (Daniel) Manning of Des Moines, Kathleen Coogan of Ft. Myers, Paul (Katie Brookhart) Coogan of Milwaukee and Christopher (Margaret Boyle) of Loveland, Colorado. Paul is also survived by his 12 grandchildren, Maureen Schiel, Katie (Bryan) Johnson, Daniel Manning, Molly Manning, Ryan Coogan, Erin Coogan, Charlie Coogan, Jack Coogan, Matthew Coogan, Thomas Coogan, Brendan Coogan and Phillip Coogan. He is also survived by 3 great-grand- children, Caroline and Norah Johnson and Lydia Schiel. Paul is also survived by his sister, Katie Ward of Bowling Green; sister-in-law, Joan Coogan of Nashville; and 25 loving nieces and nephews. In particular, his niece, Christy Coogan Frampton and her children, Tommy, Johnny and Liz, provided Paul and Joanne with much love and support over the years. Coogan, age 84, of Peoria passed away on Monday, July 23, 2018, at Lutheran Hillside Village. Joanne was born on September 3, 1933, in Chicago, a daughter of Daniel and Agnes (Campion) Jordan. She married Paul M. Coogan on October 18, 1958, at St. Cecilia's in Peoria. He preceded her in death on Friday, September 22, 2017. She is survived by their 5 children, Daniel (Joanna Norick) Coogan of Tubac, Arizona, Bridget (Daniel) Manning of Des Moines, Kathleen Coogan of Ft. Myers, Paul (Katie Brookhart) Coogan of Milwaukee and Christopher (Margaret Boyle) of Loveland, Colorado. Joanne is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Maureen (Mike) Holsen, Katie (Bryan) Johnson, Daniel Manning, Molly Manning, Ryan Coogan, Erin Coogan, Charlie Coogan, Jack Coogan, Matthew Coogan, Thomas Coogan, Brendan Coogan and Phillip Coogan; and 3 great-grandchildren, Caroline and Norah Johnson and Lydia Schiel, with another great- granddaughter due in September. Also surviving are 2 sisters, Mary Arends of Indianapolis and Sue (Dave) Willey of Sycamore, IL; brother, Dan (Pat) Jordan of Western Springs, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews. Joanne was a graduate of the Academy of Our Lady in 1951. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. She was a teacher and then worked for Dr. Canterbury. She was a long-time volunteer with the Cub Scout Troops, the Girl Scouts and the Friendship House. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and the Peoria Garden Club. She started the collection of food for the poor, after mass, at her church. The family would also like to express their gratitude towards the registered nurses, Rosie Kouri, Arzy Harlan, Kristina Swardenski, Teresa Thomas, Joanne Hoerr, Alexandra Hoerr, Lisa Leman, Karen Leman, Pam Ober, Deb Reinertsen, Anne Schaumburg, Toni Gibbs, Jill Heath, Tara McGinnis, Laurie Wilbur, Jamie Gray-Palmer, Christina John and Jeff Mocilan, PT, for their kindness, compassion and care to both Paul and Joan over the past two years; and a special thanks to Dr. Tom Kouri and neighbors, Bob and Dorothy Bousek family. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2018, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with a visitation from 9 to 10:30 a.m., also at the church. Fr.
