(COOGAN) SNOW, 87, of East Providence, passed away at Miriam Hospital on Thursday, July 16, 2009. She was the beloved wife of Robert J. Snow for 60 years. Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and May (King) Coogan. She lived in East Providence for 48 years. Prior to that, she'd been a resident of Pawtucket for 39 years. Edna began her career working for 2 years as a Rhode Island State Social Worker. She then worked for 13 years with the Social Security Administration. She retired in 1989 from the East Providence School Department, having been an elementary teacher and reading specialist for 25 years. Edna graduated from Pawtucket High School, class of '39. She attended Brown University and graduated in 1943 with a bachelors degree where she majored in political science and minored in economics. She earned a masters degree in education from Rhode Island College, class of '77. She went on to provide distinguished service in teaching and improving the field of education. Her passion for education and for public service proved to be a fortunate combination for generations of young people as well as for citizens of East Providence and the state. Rhode Island College honored Edna, the distinguished alumna and respected educator, by naming a study room in the college's newest resident hall in her honor. She established the Edna M. Snow '77 Endowed Scholarship Fund at Rhode Island College. The college held a dedication ceremony in 2007 naming the residence hall room the 'Edna M. Snow Study Room.' On the dedication plaque is her quote, 'I touch the future - I teach.' She was a past President of the East Providence Teachers Union, served for 10 years on the state Retirement Board, a past President of the East Bay Retired Teachers Association and a member of the State Association of School Committees. She was an active member of the East Providence Beautification Commission. Edna demonstrated her leadership ability and commitment to her community through her political activism. She served on the East Providence School Committee for 10 years, being Chairperson for 2 years. She has been recently recognized by such groups as the Metropolitan and Cambridge Who's Who registry of executives, professionals and entrepreneurs. She enjoyed many hours at the East Providence Senior Center where she participated in exercise classes and a weekly bridge game. She loved spending time with her family, especially her 3 grandsons. Since 1968, she worked at the university library, and the majority of that time in the inter- library loan department. This put her in contact with countless students and faculty, helping them locate items needed for teaching and research. Her efforts were much appreciated by library users. "JACK" 79, of Winterberry Drive, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, January 5, 2016. He was the husband of Barbara A. (Jordan) Coogan for 55 years. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late James W. and Lauretta S. (Carr) Coogan. Jack was the proprietor of The Shoe Box Inc. for over 17 years before retiring in 2001. He served in the US Marine Corp Reserve, the US Navy and the US Army. Jack was a communicant and an usher at Saints John & Paul Church. He was a corporator at Centreville Bank. Jack was a former member of the Warwick Umpire Association. He was the father of Michael A. Coogan, Kevin T. Coogan, and Jamie A. McEvoy and husband James all of Coventry, and the late James W. Coogan II. Jack was the brother of C. Irene Hall of Coventry, Madeline Finnegan of Texas, Robert E. Coogan of Florida, and the late Marion Baillie. He was the grandfather of James W. Coogan III, Patrick C. Coogan, Christopher T. Coogan, Kayla E. Coogan, Cara E. Coogan, Ryan J. McEvoy and Samantha A. McEvoy. Born in Providence, RI, he was the son of the late James W. Coogan Sr and Loretta S. Carr. He was proceeded by his three sisters and one brother, Marion Baillie, Catherine Hall, Madeline Finnegan and James W. Coogan. Former husband of Ann D. Coogan who passed away December 2nd, 2018. He was proceeded by his son William J. "Billy" Coogan. He is survived by two sons and a daughter, Robert E. Coogan Jr, owner and President of R.E. Coogan Heating Inc and his wife Marybel, Brian G. Coogan former East Providence State Representative of District 88, District 64 and East Providence City Councilman of Ward 2, and Barbara A. Coogan. Thirteen grandchildren: Justyne, Heather and Lindsay Coogan, Kaitlin and husband Kris Poplaski, both Providence Police Officers, Crystal Thomas, Michael Thomas, Kayla Figueroa, Cameron, Ashton, Sebastion, Landon, Blaze and Blake Coogan, three great grandchildren: Mya, Tristan and Brady, as well as many nieces and nephews. His cousin Robert O. Coogan, Ret. Det. of the Providence Police. Robert leaves behind his spouse. Former Military Veteran of the U.S. Army, Robert was a lifelong truck driver for the Teamsters local 251 Union, and drove for Hasbro Toy Company. In his younger years, Robert worked at Cardi Construction and Road Master Paveway. Avid member of the VFW Post and America Legion. Robert spent his last 10 years in Pinellas County, FL until returning to Rhode Island in 2017. We would like to recognize Jerry Johnson a longtime friend who visited our father towards the end of his illness, faithfully each day to help keep his spirits up.
