JAMES (COOGAN) SULLIVAN - Mrs. Edith Sullivan, 60, died at 3:15 p.m. Thursday [04 JUL 1957] in her home at Pithole, Pleasantville RD 2, after a month's illness. She was born in 1897, the daughter of Richard and Cecelia Coogan, in North Pinegrove, Clarion County, and was married in 1931 to James Sullivan who survives. Mrs. Sullivan was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Oil City and has resided in Pithole for the past 19 years. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Sullivan is survived by the following children: Mrs. James Conway of Pleasantville RD 2, Mrs. Margaret Eck of Youngstown [OH], James Sullivan of Youngstown [OH], Francis, Edith, Ann and Matthew at home. Funeral arrangements will be announced. 16 JUL 1962 - [PAGE 16] JAMES COOGAN, 63, SUCCUMBS IN HOSPITAL - James Leo Coogan, 63, of 27 Kramer Ave., an employee of the Oil City Glass Company, died at 11 a.m. Saturday [14 JUL 1962] in the Oil City Hospital following a short illness. He was born in North Pine-grove, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard Coogan, and attended school in North Pinegrove and Cooksburg. In 1925 he was married to the former Agnes Gregory, who survives. He moved to Oil City in 1931 and had lived in Siverly since then. Mr. Coogan was a member of Help of Christians Church and the Holy Name Society of the church. In addition to his widow, he is survived by the following children: Francis Coogan of Warren, Ohio, Richard Coogan of Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. George (Margaret) Sloan and Paul Coogan of Oil City and Donald and Jean Coogan at home, and 14 grandchildren. She was a graduate of the Oil City Hospital School of Nursing and served at the hospital as a private duty nurse for several years. Born February [15 ?], 1908, in North Pine Grove, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Cecelia Cunningham Coogan. She was a member of St. Joseph Church and St Joseph Rosary-Altar Society and the Nurses Alumni Association. Surviving along with her husband, Arthur L. Smith, are four sons, John R. COOGAN OF SHARON DIES AT 78 - SHARON - Norbert J. Coogan, 78, a retired machinist and a former resident of the Oil City area, died unexpectedly Tuesday evening in his home at Sharon. He was born December 7, 1895, in North Pine Grove, a son of Richard and Cecelia Coogan. He served in France with the U.S. Army in World War I. Mr. Coogan was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph Church in Sharon. He was married to the former Helen Richards of Oil City, who survives along with two brothers, Charles Coogan of North Pine Grove and John A. Coogan of Oil City; three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Stack of Oil City, Mrs. Ella Gregory of Grove City and Julia Coogan of Buffalo, N.Y., and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Coogan... ***possible: SEP 1999 ?*** AGNES ELIZABETH COOGAN - Agnes Elizabeth Coogan, 94, of 420 Colbert Ave., died at 11:35 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, in the home of her son, Donald, following an extended illness. Born Aug. 29, 1905, in Gilfoyle, she was a daughter of George and Mary Pomgratz Gregory. Mrs. Coogan had been employed at Falco's Restaurant in Siverly and at the Elks Club in Oil City. She had been a practical nurse for a short time and was a crossing guard for many years at Wabash and Colbert avenues. She also had worked for her daughter at Sloan's Florist. Mrs. Coogan was a member of Our Lady Help of Christian Church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking for her family and also for many church events over the years. Mrs. Coogan was married in 1925 to James Leo Coogan of North Pinegrove. He died July 14, 1962. They were married in St. Stephen Church by the Rev. John Nolan. Surviving are five children, Francis J. Coogan and his wife, Betty Coogan, Richard G. Coogan, Margaret "Peg" SLOAN and Donald J. Coogan, all of Oil City, and Mrs. William K. (Jean) BAYER of Grayslake, Ill.; a special friend, Ella May of Oil City; 18 grand- children; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grand- children. Mrs. Coogan was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Paul Leo Coogan; three grandsons, Edward J. Born April 19, 1928, in Wyandotte, Mich., she was a daughter of the late Harry and Leah Collin Reid. She was raised in Ohio. A homemaker, she had worked for 10 years at Polk Center in the Meadowside Building until a disability forced her early retirement. Her interests included cooking, traveling, her favorite soap operas and her grandchildren. She was married Feb. 13, 1960, in Winchester, Va., to James J. Coogan, who survives. Also surviving are seven children, Jackie Eaton and her husband, Richard, of Seneca, Richard Weese of Cleveland, Ohio, William Weese of Sharon, Robert Seliskar of Tampa, Fla., Michael Coogan and his wife, Marsha, of Chesapeake, Va., Jim Coogan and his wife, Traci, of Oil City, and Kim Berry and her husband, Tom, of Oil City; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grand- children. COOGAN - Rosemary R. Coogan, 73, of 238 Cherrytree Road, Franklin, died at 8:40 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003 at The Caring Place, Franklin. Born Jan. 8, 1930, she was the daughter of Lee H. and Elizabeth Bucholz Irwin. Mrs. Coogan attended Oil City schools and graduated in 1948 from St. Joseph High School. In 1951, she graduated from Spencer School of Nursing in Meadville. She worked as a nurse for Northwest Medical Center, retiring in November 1992 after more than 30 years of service. She was a member of St. Patrick Church and was a room mother for eight years at St. Patrick School. She was a member of Catholic Daughters of America and the St. Joseph-Venango Catholic Alumni Association. She enjoyed her grand- children and her dog, Lady. She also was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Mrs. Coogan was married on Oct. 6, 1951 to John A. Coogan Jr., who survives. Also surviving are a son, John A. Coogan III, and his wife, Linda, of Franklin; four grandchildren, John A. Coogan IV of Franklin, Benjamin R. Coogan, 97, of 73 Horne Lane, Oil City, formerly of Kenmore, N.Y., died at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at UPMC Northwest following a short illness. Born April 11, 1907, in North Pinegrove, she was the daughter of the late Richard F. and Cecelia Cunningham Coogan. She attended the Hefren School at North Pinegrove, St. Joseph School, Oil City, and was a graduate of Welch Business School, Oil City. Miss Coogan worked for 16 years in the advertising department of Pennzoil in Oil City before moving to Buffalo, N.Y., in 1944, where she was employed by Bell Aircraft Corp. and Chevrolet Motor Co. In 1950, she became co-owner of the Judy Lynn Specialty Shop, which she operated until her retirement in 1968. While residing in Buffalo, she was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Kenmore, the Kenmore Mercy Hospital Guild, Catholic Business Women's Club of Buffalo, Women's First Friday Club of Buffalo and St. John senior citizen group. She was a past member of the Buffalo Board of Realtors. While residing in Oil City, she was a member of St. Joseph Church and the Prime Timers. She was the oldest living member of St. Joseph Church. Miss Coogan was an avid reader. She loved to take walks and was very fond of her neice's dog, Mickey. She is survived by many neices and nephews and great- neices and nephews and their families. She kept in contact with them and was very interested in their lives. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Francis (Frank), John A., Norbert, Charles and James Coogan; four sisters, Edith Sullivan, Elizabeth Stack, Ella Gregory and Mary C. Smith; and her dear friend, Mildred Leising, with whom she made her home in Kenmore. 'DIAMOND JIM' COOGAN [photo] - Francis J. "Diamond Jim" Coogan, 80, of 7 VoTech Drive, Apt. 6-C, Oil City, died at 11:15 p.m. Monday, April 30, 2007, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca, following an extended illness. Born May 31, 1926, in Sharon, he was the son of James Leo and Agnes Gregory Coogan. At a young age his family moved to Oil City where he attended schools. Mr. Coogan was a Yeoman 3rd Class in the U.S. Navy during WW II, serving aboard the USS Abrams DE-575. He received the Asiatic, Pacific, American, European, African, Middle Eastern and Philippine Victory medals with three Bronze Stars. He served from Feb. 17, 1944, to Feb. 1, 1946, when he left his ship. He later was called up to serve during the Korean Conflict. A teamster and union steward, Mr. Coogan previously was employed by Halls and Daniels Trucking. He also did mail runs to Pittsburgh and Jamestown and was self-employed at the time of his death as an independent contractor for Chevron. He was a member of Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Siverly. He also belonged to the VFW and the B.P.O. Elks. Mr. Coogan was married in Winchester, Va., Feb. 13, 1960, to the former Betty Jean Reid, who preceded him in death Nov. 29, 2002. Surviving are nine children and their spouses, Michael and Marsha Coogan of Chesapeake, Va., James Leo Coogan, Kim and Tom Berry and Nancy and Perry Schreffler, all of Oil City; James Francis and Cynthia Coogan of Tennessee;, Cindy and Nic Noble and Jackie and Richard Eaton, all of Seneca; William Paul Weese of Sharon and Robert Seliskar of Tampa, Fla.; 24 grand- children; and 21 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one brother, Richard Coogan of Oil City; two sisters, Peg Sloan of Oil City and Jean Bayer of Illinois; and numerous nieces and nephews. He attended both St. Joseph and Oil City schools. He was employed for more than 30 years at Foster Forbes Glass in Rouseville and served as union delegate for several years of his employment. He also was a member of several fraternal organizations in Oil City. Mr. Coogan is survived by one son, Terrence Coogan and his wife, Cindy, of Titusville; one grandson, T. J. Coogan of Titusville; and three adopted daughters, Patty, Debra and Lynn, all of Oil City. Also surviving are two sisters, Margaret Sloan of Oil City and Jean Bayer of Grayslake, Ill; one brother, Richard Coogan of Oil City; and several nieces and nephews.
