He was admitted a week ago. Born May 16, 1882, in Boston, he was the son of Edward C. and Lucy Crumb Coogan. He married the former Bertha McVay Aug. 2, 1905, in Phenix, R.I. The marriage was performed by her father, the Rev. John McVay, who was pastor of the Mystic First Methodist Church from 1898 to 1902. In World War I, he was a draftsman at Winchester Fire Arms, New Haven. He was a member of the Mystic Hook & Ladder Co. Mr. Coogan launched his own venetian blind and window shade business in 1929, and was well-known in Mystic by his trade sobriquet - "Coogan, The Blind Man." In addition to his widow, he is survived by three brothers, Clarence A. St. of Mysic, Arthur T. Coogan of Wakefield, R.I., and Henry Coogan of Waterford. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Shea-Williams Funeral Home. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. 13 APR 1971 - [PAGE 32] WATERFORD - HENRY COOGAN - Henry Holmes Coogan, 74, of 1068 Hartford Turnpike died Tuesday at Uncas-on-Thames in Norwich where he was a patient two weeks. Born June 4, 1896, in Mystic, he was the son of Edward C. and Lucy Crumb Coogan. He married the former Phyllis Brooks April 24, 1916, in New London. She survives him. Mr. Coogan retired in 1961 as a night supervisor at General Dynamics-Electric Boat. He was a member of Union Lodge of Masons in New London and attended Lakes Pond Baptist Church. He was an amateur horticulturist and raised flowers as a hobby. Survivors besides his widow include a son, Henry H. Coogan Jr., at home, and two brothers, Clarence of Mystic and Arthur Coogan of Wakefield, R.I. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Byles Memorial Home in New London. Interment will be in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic. She was the sister of Stonington First Selectman Edward C. Coogan Sr., and the wife of Franklin A. Howe. She was born July 20, 1925, in Mystic, where she was raised. She was a school teacher, graduated from the Willimantic State Teachers College in 1948. She taught in a one room schoolhouse in Ledyard and taught at the Hockanum School in East Hartford for 20 years. She was a member of the Mystic Congregational Church and the Connecticut State Educators Association. Survivors are her husband and brother; parents, Clarence A. Coogan I and Clara Morgan Coogan of Mystic; three other brothers, Clarence A. Coogan II of Mystic, Jesse Coogan of Mystic and Francis Coogan of Jackson, Miss.; and two sisters, Mrs. Edward Lathrop of Luthera, Nassau and Mrs. James Marshall of Old Mystic. 15 APR 1986 - [PAGE 12] WATERFORD - Phyllis Brooks Coogan, 89, formerly of 1073 Hartford Turnpike, died Monday at Liberty Hall Convalescent Home in Colchester. Mrs. Coogan was a member of the Lakes Pond Baptist Church. She was born Aug. 15, 1896, in New London, the daughter of James and Ada Wilkinson Brooks. Her husband, Henry H. Coogan, died April 13, 1971. Survivors include a son, Henry H. Coogan Jr. of Voluntown. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Byles Memorial Home, New London. Interment will be in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic. Calling hours are 7 to 9 tonight. 17 JUN 2002 NEW LONDON - Marian Frances Coogan Conn, 86, formerly of 331 Ocean Ave., New London, died on Sunday, surrounded by her family and extended family of caregivers at Nutmeg Pavilion Healthcare, where she had resided since 1992. Mrs. Conn had been ill with Alzheimer's disease for many years. Mrs. Conn was born on Oct. 24, 1915, in West Warwick, RI, the daughter of the late Frank and Lucy McCarthy Coogan. She was the widow of Raymond C. Conn, Jr., who died Sept. 30, 1986. They were married July 9, 1937 in West Warwick and moved to Connecticut in 1948. Mrs. Conn was a homemaker who was named Connecticut Mother of the Year in 1985 in recognition of her many charitable pursuits and care for others. In acknowledgement of this honor, both Gov. William O'Niell and Mayor Jay Levin proclaimed Marian Conn Day that year. Mrs. Conn was active in her church, St. Joseph in New London, where she servedas a minister of the Eucharist, chairwoman of the Liturgical Committee and as a member of the Parish Council. She served as president of Catholic Charities, as a member of the Board of Directors of the Norwich Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, as a founding member of the St. Joseph Confraternity of Christian Women and a member of the interfaith group Church Women United. She served as vice chairwoman of the Legistlative Committee of the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She volunteered with the Catholic Library Association, the Catholic Charities Shop, and also at Nutmeg Pavilion Healthcare for many years. During the 1970s and 1980s, Mr. and Mrs. Conn opened their home to the families of several out of state victims of local accidents who were long term patients at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Conn was an accomplished seamstress, needle worker and baker, and was known for her hand- braided rugs. She and her husband also enjoyed the beach, camping and travel. Mrs. Conn is survived by Janice Kyrazis and her husband, George Kyrazis of Daytona Beach, Fla.; Jeremy Conn of Point Richmond, Calif.; Timothy Conn and his wife, Jacqueline Conn of Buxton, Maine; Laurene Warnick and her husband, John Warnick of Enfield; Honora Conn and her husband, Eric Dixon of Upper Orewa, New Zealand; and Martha Conn and her husband Peter Detmold of New London. She was predeceased by two children, Lucy Christiansen and Raymond C. Conn III. She leaves 20 grandchildren and 13 great- grandchildren. Two sisters, Dorothy Biron of Webster, Mass., and Noreen Bedard of San Francisco, Calif., also survive her. She was predeceased by her sisters, Rita Gould, Barbara Rhodes and Phyllis Lamb, and her brother, Frank P. Coogan. The funeral will assemble on Wednesday at 10:15 at the Thomas L. Coogan, Sr., 82, of Greenmanville Avenue, Mystic, died Friday at the Mary Elizabeth Nursing Center in Mystic after a lengthy illness. He was born in Mystic on Jan. 27, 1921, son of the late Clarence and Clara Morgan Coogan. He was a 1938 graduate of Stonington High School. Mr. Coogan served in World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps, retiring as a master sergeant. He married Jean Bitters in New London on Oct. 23, 1943. She survives. Mr. Coogan was employed at the former Sonoco Products Co. in Mystic and later with Stan Williams Appliance Store. He and Andy Gildersleeve then opened Coogan-Gildersleeve appliance store on Greenmanville Avenue in Mystic, there he worked until he retired. Long active in the community, he served as a selectman in the town of Stonington for 20 years beginning in 1961. He was a Boy Scout leader and had received the Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of the Hugo Simonelli Post V.F.W. of Mystic, a member of the Groton Sportsmens Club and the Mystic Rod and Gun Club. He was a member of the Social Society of Froshinn of Mystic and the Mystic Congregational Church. In addition to his wife Jean, he is survived by a son, Edward C. He was predeceased by his sisters Priscilla Howe... 01 JUL 2007 - [PAGE (12)] MYSTIC - Clarence Augustus Coogan, Jr., retired Army Captain, 84, husband of Bertha M. Coogan of Stoneridge at 186 Jerry Browne Road, Mystic, died Tuesday, June 26, 2007. He was born on June 23, 1923, and raised on Village Farm in Mystic, which was a section of the Denison Farm. His heritage included a number of founding fathers from whom he descended, including the families Denison, Avery, Morgan, Mason, Crumb and Wheeler, who were early settlers of the area. He married Bertha M. Coogan on July 7, 1945. He matriculated at the University of Connecticut in September 1941, where he excelled in academics and cross country. He left the university when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a pilot trainee. He graduated as a co-pilot of the four-engine B-24 Liberator bomber and was stationed in Italy. He was promoted to first pilot during combat experiences, an extremely rare advancement. He was awarded several medals including four air medals. After Germany surrendered, he returned to the United States and trained B-29 crews and became a captain. Once discharged, he re-entered the University of Connecticut and graduated in 1948 with a bachelor of arts degree. He ultimately received a master's degree, and a sixth-year certificate. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and Phi Delta Kappa. His Stonington educational experiences included teaching general science, biology and chemistry, and three years as assistant principal. His Waterford educational experiences included opening of a new junior high school (Clark Lane) as principal. He was the youngest secondary school administrator in Connecticut. He finished his administrative role as assistant superintendent until he retired in 1961. He then taught in his wife's Cap'N'Stove nursery school for 12 years and completed 45 years in educating young people. Other experiences included assessor service and the board of directors and president of Lords Point Association, where he was instrumental in saving Beach Street and having a tennis court built. He was a past Grand of Odd Fellows and was on an initiating committee to establish scholarships. He was a member of Waterford Rotary, serving on the board of directors and on a committee that initiated scholarships. He transferred to the Mystic Rotary and again served on the board of directors and on a committee initiating scholarships. In addition, he was a member of the Mystic Congregational Church of Eastern Connecticut; a member of the Eastern Connecticut Conference athletic association, where he received a life membership for attendance to games; a corporator of Liberty Bank; and a member of several local, state and national educational associations. He was the initiator of late arrivals in area schools; enrolled emotionally disturbed students in Waterford High School in the late 1960s; obtained an education grant for Waterford tribal members; and was the initial founder of Project Oceanology in 1971. Students acted as administrators of the project until he retired in 1961, and he was instrumental in the employment of Dr. Mickey Weiss as director of Project Oceanology. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Bertha M. Coogan; two sons, Cap Coogan of Westerly and Steve Coogan and his wife, Kathy, of Oregon; four grandsons, Skip and Damonica Coogan, Todd Coogan, Liam and Christian Coogan; and great-granddaughter, Chloe Coogan; also a brother, Francis Coogan; and a sister, Ellen Marshall; and several nieces and nephews. Clarence was predeceased by two brothers, Edward and Jesse and two sisters, Priscilla and Clarisy. A private ceremony was held for Clarence at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2007, at the Mystic Funeral Home by James P. O'Boyle. There will be no calling hours. [photo] 19 JAN 2008 MYSTIC - Bertha Lapoint Burns Coogan, 84, of Mystic, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Avalon of Stoneridge. She was born in Burlington, VT on May 31, 1923 daughter of the late William C. and Bernice (Wilson) Burns. She married Lt. Clarence A. Coogan Jr. in Montpelier, VT at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church. She graduated from the Montpelier High School in 1941 and attended Vermont Junior College and Heaton Hospital School of Nursing. During WWII she was a parachute inspector at Cheney Bros. Co. in Manchester CT. She was accredited by the CT State Dep't of Education for the "Cap 'N' Steve Nursery School" where she owned and operated the school from 1971-1993. She substituted in a one room school house in Old Mystic, and other Groton schools. She also taught at the Waterford County School. She loved children and was loved by all of them. She leaves her two sons, Clarence A. Coogan III of Westerly, R.I. and Stephen C. Coogan and his wife, Kathleen, of Tualatin OR; a brother, Raymond Paul Burns of Winooski VT; four grandsons, Clarence A. Coogan 4th and his wife, Damonica, of Providence, R.I., Todd G. Coogan of New Haven, Stephen L. and Christian D. Coogan, both of Tualatin OR; and a great-granddaughter, Chloe Coogan. She was predeceased by brother and sister in VT. [photo] 05 JUN 2011 JACKSON, MISS. - Francis "Frank" Carr Coogan, retired engineer, educator and aircrew (U.S. Navy), 82, passed away on Friday, May 6, 2011, at Regency Hospital/St. Dominic in Jackson, Miss. Frank was born in Stonington, on Nov. 7, 1928. He graduated from Stonington High School in 1946, and joined the U.S. Navy July 5, 1946. Frank was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He served on board the USS Saipan, CVL 48 during World War II and was a radar instructor at Millington, Tenn. He was a member of American Legion Post #1 in Pearl, Miss. He held many post offices and was central vice commander and Boy's State Chairman for 5 years. Frank was a certified AME product engineer, a senior SME U IEEE and a member of NSIA. He taught Sunday School for 20 years at Brierwood Methodist Church before transferring to McLaurin Methodist Church in Pearl, Miss. He was employed at Electric Boat General Dynamics for 11 years after discharge from the U.S. Navy, while at Electric Boat, he attended Mitchell College in New London, and earned the ASENG with the highest grades in his class, winning the faculty award in engineering. He worked on SSN 571, the first nuclear submarine. He was a pioneer in electronic intelligence. He also worked on and sailed on, sea trails as leading electronics technician for Electric Boat. Frank was employed by and retired from Siemens, Miss. for 28 years. He taught at Columbus Tech Inst. in Columbus, Ohio, U.S. Navy electronic basic in Millington, Tenn., also taught airborne radar operation. He taught electronics, physics and math at Hinds Community College for 21 years in the evening division, also at Packard Electric and MTI in Brandon, Miss. Survivors include his wife, Shirley A. Coogan of Pearl, Miss, two daughters, Clara Ruth Powell of Pearl, Miss., Kathy Olson and her husband, Randy, of Plano, Texas; step-daughter, Lisa Hinson and her husband, Bill, of Pearl, Miss.; step-son, Todd Steinkamp and his wife, Robin, of Houston, Texas; two grandsons, David Powell of Pearl, Miss., and Matthew Olson of Plano, Texas; one step-grandson, Andrew Brooks of Houston, Texas; one granddaughter, Sarah Olson of Plano, Texas; two step-grandaughters, Lauren Steinkamp of Pelahatchie, Miss, and Amber Brooks of Houston, Texas; and one sister, Ellen Marshall of Stonington. Born in New London, she was the daughter of the late George and Hannah (Mallory) Bitters. She attended Quaker Hill Schools and was a graduate of Williams Memorial Institute, class of 1938 and the New London Business College where she met and later married her husband, the late Edward C. Coogan Sr. Jean and her husband made their home on their farm on Greenmanville Ave. where they raised their three children. She worked for several years for SNET and eventually with the former Sonoco Products in Mystic, where she was a secretary. Jean was an avid reader and regularly read up to at least three books a week. She enjoyed cross-stitching, trout fishing, dancing, playing the piano and especially solving her daily crossword puzzles. She would even consistently master the more difficult Sunday edition crossword puzzle. She also had an extensive collection of crystal and porcelain turtles that she cherished so much. Her family will also miss her humorous wit and her famous "Hannahisms." She is survived by her three children, Edward C. Coogan Jr. and his wife, Kathleen, of Stonington, and two daughters, Betty Jean Hewitt and her husband, Carl, of Stonington and Martha Flemming and her husband, Neil, of Milford, Mass.; five grand- children, Eric Flemming and his wife, Jennifer, Candace Flemming, Sarah and Rachel Coogan and Ginger Hixson and her husband, Andrew; and four great-grandchildren, Krista Flemming and Katarina, Lily, and Alex Hixson; two nephews, John Bitters and George Bitters and his wife, Joan; niece, Barbara Neville and her husband, Richard.
