Jack was born in Northmark, AB March 7, 1935 to Leo (Pat) and Hazel Coogan. Jack was raised in Debolt and at the age of 16 went to Fairview College to study Agriculture. Even though Jack was only there one year, the first year the college opened, he spoke proudly of his education. After leaving school Jack returned home and went to work on service rigs for several years. He then moved to Valleyview and bought the lot which is still the Coogan home. Jack met his one and only, Shela, while they were neighbours in Valleyview the spring of 1963. On December 14, 1963 Jack and Shela were married with Larkin and Kevin as step sons. In 1965 Jack and Shela lost their infant son John Jr. Then on February 11, 1968 their daughter Jacquelin (Jackie) was born. In 1970 Jack decided that being away from home was not for him. He went to work for Al Snydmiller (a lifetime friend) at the bulk station in Valleyview driving fuel truck by day and working on ski-doos in Al's shop at night. In 1975 Jack went to work for East Smoky School Division in the Maintenance Department and later trained to be the division's grounds keeper. Upon Jack's retirement he went to work for several years at the Valleyview Building Supplies as their small engine repair man. Jack was a genius when it came to small engines and anyone who knew him would attest to this. When Jack's health started to fail he had to retire from the store as well. He fought a long and hard battle against his lung disease, Farmer's Lung, no one really knowing how ill he really was. but lost the war on August 6, 2009. Jack will be dearly and forever missed by his family and friends. His love of family, his grandsons the highlight of his life, his passion for the great outdoors, his ability to tell and appreciate a good Joke, his knack of making a fish story go the full yards, and respect he had for his close friends made Jack the man we all knew. He will forever be in our hearts. Left to mourn are his wife Shela of 45 years, daughter Jackie (Roger) Boyd of Valleyview, stepson Larkin (Miranda) Taylor of Calgary, the apple of his eye. his grandchildren, Tyler (Lana) Boyd of Grande Prairie, Mitchell and Tyrell of Valleyview, Wyatt, Linden and Dallas of Calgary. Jack is also survived by his sister Noreen (Roy) Bickell of Grande Prairie, Gerry (Curly) Coogan of Debolt, David (Nina) Coogan of Camrose, Brian (Karen) Coogan of Ketowna, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Leo (Pat) Coogan and Hazel Coogan. infant son John Coogan, and stepson Kevin Taylor. At Jack's request a cremation has taken place and a funeral service will not be held. In lieu of donations plant a tree in Jack's memory. He loved the bush, and his final resting place at the Grande Prairie Cemetery will be next to a huge blue spruce which he always admired and was glad that his mom and dad were buried there. ____________________________________________________________________ *** (1965-2008) http://gp.abgensoc.ca/obituaries.html *** (2003-2009) http://cgi.bowesonline.com/pedro.php?id=1&x=obituaries *** (2009-2009) http://www.dailyheraldtribune.com
