Born in Bronx, New York in 1930, he spent most of his life in Maryland. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard from 1948 to 1954. After 39 years of federal service, he retired in 1991 and moved to Jacksonville. He was a 25-year member of the Knights of Columbus, Waldorf, MD, Council No. 2293. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Marlene of Jacksonville; five sons, one daughter and seven grandchildren, all of Maryland. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 14, 1998 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 224 North 5th Street, Jacksonville Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made, in his memory, to Northeast Hospice, 4266 Sunbeam Rd. 32257. 27 FEB 2011 PHELAN - Margaret Coogan 'Susie' Phelan Susie Phelan died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on February 20, 2011 after a lengthy illness. Susie was born in New Orleans Louisiana on December 6, 1948 to Frank Johnson Coogan and Martha Marie Edwards. She grew up in Baton Rouge Louisiana until the family moved to Alabama in 1957. She attended St. Pius X and Convent of Mercy High School in Mobile Alabama. She graduated from Spring Hill College in 1971 and earned a Masters Degree in Vocational and Rehabilitative Counseling from the University of South Alabama in 1973. She moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 1975 and lived there until her death. After moving to Jacksonville Susie became very active in volunteer organizations working with the Junior League and serving on the Board of Directors of Ronald McDonald House. Susie returned to school attending accounting classes at the University of North Florida and earned her CPA in 1989. She worked as an accountant for Coopers & Lybrand and Blue Cross Blue Shield among others until January 2009. Susie is survived by her beloved sons, Patrick Coogan Phelan and Timothy Michael Phelan, Jr. and her true and caring friend Bruce Roberts of Jacksonville, her sister Ellen Coogan Verret, her niece Sybil Margaret Verret and nephew Laurence Francis Verret of Sugar Land Texas; and two aunts Mrs. Dorothy Edwards Reynaud and Mrs. Helen Edwards Farris both of the New Orleans area. A memorial mass celebrating Susie's life will be held at St. Matthew's Catholic Church at 1773 Blanding Blvd. in Jacksonville on Wednesday March 2, 2011 at 10 AM. Susie will be buried in New Orleans. Susie's family wishes to thank her caregivers and Brian Stephens for their kindness and compassion during the last weeks of Susie's life. Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com 15 MAR 2011 SPERBECK - Jean Coogan Sperbeck, 70, died Feb 28th, 2011, in Jacksonville, FL with her family by her side. Born on Jan 23rd, 1941 in Utica, NY, she was the 2nd of 3 children born to Joseph and Ada Coogan. Utica, NY is where she met and married David Bruce Sperbeck and then moved to Miami, FL where together they raised and loved their four children. She sang for a number of years in the Shenandoah Presbyterian Church choir and had a great passion for camping, gardening, astronomy and nature which she loved to share with her children. Jean always had a sunny disposition, sunflowers were her favorite flower, and believed that if something nice could not be said about someone, then nothing should be said at all. She was a Girl Scout leader and worked at Girl Scout camps for a number of years. She loved taking pictures and was very organized in documenting the people and places in the pictures. Her pleasant personality and organizational skills led to her becoming part owner of General Oceanics, a company in Miami, Fl. Jean is survived by one of her 2 brothers and her 4 children: Ralph Coogan (brother), Jean A. Sperbeck (daughter), James D. Sperbeck (son), Barbara E. Sperbeck (daughter), and Susan R.
