Coogan, 89, of West Yarmouth, a retired clerical worker, died Nov. 15 at Eagle Pond Nursing Home in South Dennis after a long illness. Miss Coogan was born in Boston. She moved to West Yarmouth nine years ago. Before that, she had lived in North Quincy for about 34 years. Miss Coogan worked for about 10 years for the Suffolk Registry of Deeds in Boston until retiring in 1968. Survivors include three brothers; a sister, Irene Golden of West Yarmouth; several nieces and nephews. Miss Coogan also was the sister of the late James J. Coogan III. 25 MAR 2001 EDMOND G. COOGAN, 57 - Former Oak Bluffs Selectman, High School Teacher, Planner - TISBURY - Edmond G. Coogan, 57, of Vinyard Haven, died Friday at his home after a long battle with cancer. He was the husband of Liza (Dwyer) Coogan. Mr. Coogan was born in Boston. He began spending summers on Martha's Vinyard in 1944, first in the family cottage in Oak Bluffs and then at the St. Pierre School of Sports in Vineyard Haven. He graduated from Boston College in 1966 and earned a master's degree in public affairs from the State University of New York at Albany in 1968. He was married in 1971 and moved to the Vineyard shortly thereafter. Mr. Coogan taught government at Martha's Vineyard Regional High School. He then became a planner for the Martha's Vineyard Commission and was elected to the board of selectmen in Oak Bluffs. During that time he also attended Suffolk University Law School, where he earned his juris doctor degree. He was admitted to the state and federal bars in 1984. In 1985 he moved to Vineyard Haven, where he served on the Tisbury Board of Assessors and the All-Island School Committee. In 1996 he was elected to the Tisbury Board of Selectmen, where he served until his death. Mr. Coogan was an avid supporter of the Martha's Vineyard Arena, and enjoyed sailing and gardening. Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Will Coogan of Los Angeles and Geoghan Coogan of Dorchester a daughter, Virginia Nelligan Coogan of Tisbury two brothers, William H. Coogan of Portland, Maine, and Gregory A. Coogan of Oak Bluffs and several nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held at noon tomorrow in the Whaling Church in Edgartown. PIUS X PARISH; RESIDED IN WEST YARMOUTH - WEST YARMOUTH - H. Irene (Coogan) Golden, 95, a resident of West Yarmouth, died yesterday following a long illness. She was the wife of the late Gerard L. Golden. Mrs. Golden was born in Boston and lived in North Quincy for more than 40 years before moving to West Yarmouth in 1977. She was a member of the North Quincy Catholic Women's Club and a member of St. Pius X Parish. Surviving are a son, Gerard of Bourne; and a sister-in-law, Virginia Coogan of Brewster; and many nieces and nephews. Services are private. COOGAN, 97, CO-OWNER, OPERATOR OF CHOWDER BOWL; VOLUNTEER - BREWSTER - Virginia E. (Ippolito) Coogan, 97, died Feb. 1 at Epoch Senior Healthcare of Brewster. She was the wife of the late James J. Coogan for 40 years. Mrs. Coogan was born in Stoughton and graduated from Stoughton High School in 1924. She was a secretary for the Prince Macaroni Co. in Boston and Lowell before marrying. She and her husband moved to Brewster in 1948 and to Yarmouth in 1965. She worked for the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, eventually becoming office manager, and also co-owned and operated the Chowder Bowl restaurant in Dennisport with her husband. After retiring from the Chamber in 1973, she was a volunteer at Our Lady of the Cape Thrift Shop and Cape Cod Hospital, where she put in more than 12,000 hours of service. She was also a longtime women's guild member. Survivors include a son, James J. Coogan Jr. of Dennis; three grand-children; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Cape Church, Stony Brook Road, Brewster. Burial is private. Beloved husband of 60 years to Helen P. (Wojcik); preceded in death by his infant son, Richard Francis; devoted father of Maureen O'Dowd (David) of Norwell, Patricia Cain (Leo) of West Dennis, Kathleen Harrington (Robert) of Cohasset, and Judith of Quincy; loving grand- father of Richard Harrington of South Boston, John Harrington of Savannah, Georgia, and Leo Cain IV of West Dennis. Mr. Coogan retired from the U. S. Postal Service. He was a great storyteller, historian and a lifelong learner, he graduated Cum Laude from the University of Massachusetts at the age of 71.
