She died Dec. 20, 2000, in Needham, Mass., where she had been staying, after a short illness. She was 77. Born Rhoda Coogan in New York City, she spent her childhood in New York and Gladstone, N.J., and was a member of a family prominient in American history and New York cultural circles. Her great-great-grandfather was War of 1812 hero Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. Her grandfather, Henry Fairfield Osborn, was president of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Her great-uncle, William Church Osborn, was president of the Metropolitan Museum. Her uncle, Fairfield Osborn, was president of the New York Zoological Society. Her mother was one of the early members of the Colony Club in New York. She was a graduate of Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, Pa., and studied at Barnard College. She moved to Buffalo in 1947 after marrying her husband, Charles, an attorney. His father, George Cary, designed the New York State Pavilion for the Pan-American Exposition, which now houses the Buffalo and Erie County Historic Society. She was a member of the board of directors of the Buffalo Zoo and was active in Planned Parenthood of Western New York, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Society, the Alrbight-Knox Art Gallery and the Buffalo Historical Society. She also was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America. She loved sports and was active in the Buffalo Saddle and Bridle Club, the Genesee Valley Hunt and Crag Burn Golf Club. In 1978, whe moved from East Aurora to Delray Beach, and spent summers in Boston, Mass., where she was a member of The Country Club.
