His kindly, genial disposition had made him a warm favourite with those with whom he came in contact in the service, as well as with the travellers on the line; and perhaps the truest proof of the respect in which he was held by those on the line more immediately associated with him was the request that, although his death took place on Thursday afternoon, the remains should not be interred until the following Sunday at such an hour as all the officials on the County Down line could attend the funeral. Accordingly, the funeral cortege left Servia Street on Sunday morning shortly after eleven o’clock, the esteem in which the deceased was held by his co-workers on the line being exemplified by the very beautiful wreaths which were placed upon the coffin by them in affectionate remembrance. When the funeral came opposite the Chapel of St Columbkill, at the approach to Holywood, the coffin was taken out of the hearse and borne on the shoulders of friends and sympathisers to the graveyard. A large number of carriages and private cars followed, as well as a vast concourse of the inhabitants. Rev James O’Laverty, P.P., M.R.I.A., who met the funeral procession on coming into Holywood, and accompanied it to the graveyard, officiated at the grave. 07 AUG 1896 COOGAN, August 6 1896 at 136 Albert Street, Belfast.
