Gordon Coogan Jr, an insurance broker and grandson of the late James J. Coogan, first Borough President of Manhattan, died Saturday at his home in Long Beach, Calif., after a brief illness. His age was 45. Mr. Coogan, born in England, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Coogan of Madison, N.J., and New York. On his maternal side, he was the grandson of the late Theodore A. Havemeyer, founder of the American Sugar Refining Company. A member of the class of '32 at Harvard College, where he was an outstanding distance runner, Mr. Coogan later became associated with the New York Life Insurance Company. During World War II, he served for three years in North Africa and Italy as an officer in a tank destoyer battalion. Mr. Coogan was wounded and received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. After the war, he moved to Long Beach with his family. Surviving also are his widow, the former Elizabeth LaCoste; a daughter, Karen; a son, W.
