Obituary of Robert John Coogan

BOB COOGAN, 82; SERVICE NOV. 22

Bob Coogan of Morehead City, beloved husband of Joan Coogan, died
Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, at UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill with
his family at his bedside.  He was 82 years old and died following
surgery for melanoma.

In addition to Mrs. Coogan, his wife of 54 years, Mr. Coogan is
survived by four children, Cynthia Coogan, Jan Coogan, Lynne Lynch
and Tom Coogan; five beloved grandchildren, Meghan Lynch, Kate 
Lynch, Jack Coogan, Patrick Coogan and Madelyn Coogan; and one
brother, Dick Coogan.

A veteran of World War II, he was a U.S. Navy signalman first class.
He graduated from St. Joseph's College and co-captained the varsity
baseball team.  For the majority of his working years, Mr. Coogan 
was a district sales manager for G.O. Carlson Steel Co. while living
in Westlake, Ohio, with his wife and four children.

Mr. Coogan was very active in his children's sports.  He also 
enjoyed badminton, golf, tennis and crewing on Lake Erie.  Following
retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Coogan's 20-plus years in Morehead City 
were among the happiest and most fulfilling years of their lives.
In addition to volunteering for Habitat for Humanity for several
years, he loved to golf with good friends at Morehead City Country
Club, where he shot a hole-in-one, and later at the Brandywine 
Country Club.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at St.
Egbert Catholic Church.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may
be made to St. Egbert School, 1705 Evans St., Morehead City, N.C.
28557; or the Hospice Society of Carteret County.  

A loving father and devoted husband, Mr. Coogan was dearly loved 
and will be greatly missed.  The family wishes to express its 
sincere appreciation to Mr. and Mrs. Coogan's friends for their 
support during these last two challenging months.
