COL., U.S. MARINE CORPS (RET.) Richard "Dick" Joseph Coogan, 91, of McLean, VA, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2023 with his family at his side. Born on February 24, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA, Dick graduated from St. Joseph's College in 1954 where he lettered in track and field, and was a featured Glee Club tenor soloist. He entered the Marine Corps officer ranks as an honor graduate of the Officer Candidate School in Quantico, VA. While posted at the Marine Corps Ceremonial Barracks in Washington, DC in 1958, Dick met the beautiful Mary (Mimi) Hubbard of Torrington, CT; they married a year later and soon welcomed six children. Dick's overseas service included three tours in Vietnam. He retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1978, having earned many military decorations. Dick spent the next 30+ years as an Associate Broker and Realtor in Northern Virginia. He founded the McLean Hamlet Community Association's Neighborhood Watch Program, and coached McLean Youth basketball. Dick's other interests were many: running (slowly) over long distances was foremost, including an annual half-marathon, the last one at age 82. He especially enjoyed having his children and grandchildren join him at races. Dick continued to golf and bowl well into his final decade. Dick is predeceased by four months by his wife, Mimi Coogan. His memory is cherished by their six children and their spouses, Christopher (Jan), Eileen (Bernie Moye), Melanie (Joel Bryan), Thomas (Dawn), John (Alison), and Robert (Tanya), 10 grand- children, and one great-granddaughter, Lillian Mary Coogan. Visitation will be Weds, June 28, 5 to 7 p.m. at Money & King Funeral Home, 171 W Maple Ave, Vienna, VA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Luke Catholic Church, 7001 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA on Thurs, June 29, at 10 a.m., with inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
