HOLLYWOOD, Calif., May 8 (AP). - Jackie Coogan, the screen "kid" of long ago, arose today from a hospital bed as he had promised to attend the funeral of his father, Jack Coogan Sr., who as business manager of the youthful actor had made him wealthy. The elder Coogan was killed on Saturday night in an automobile accident near San Diego, which also cost the lives of Trent (Junior) Durkin, friend of Jackie and also an actor; Robert Horner, screen and radio writer, and Clarence Jones, Coogan ranch foreman. Jackie, seriously injured, was the only one of the party to escape alive. Tightly taped, he was taken to the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills to hear the requiem high mass. When he arrived at the church he went at once to his mother's side and kissed her. Both were weeping. They entered the church behind the coffin, which was accompanied by six black- robed alter boys, carrying candles. After the service, Jackie returned to the hospital. He did not see the burial in Calvary Cemetery. The funerals for Durkin and Jones were held yesterday. Horner will be buried tomorrow. __________________________________________________________________ (extracted from "Chicago Tribune" [IL], 09 MAY 1935): [...] ...the body of John Coogan Sr. rested today while solemn mass was celebrated... __________________________________________________________________ (extracted from "Time" [Magazine], 13 MAY 1935, PAGE ?): MILESTONES DIED - John Coogan, father of retired Child Actor Jackie Coogan, 21; Junior Durkin, 19, actor (Huckleberry Finn, Little Men); and two others; when an automobile driven by the elder Coogan plunged down a mountain embankment; near San Diego, Calif.
