Coogan ___________________________________________________________________ (extracted from "Troy Times-Record" [NY], 07 SEP 1954, PAGE 9): JAMES COOGAN, JAIL GUARD DIES SUDDENLY James. H. Coogan, a guard at the Rensselaer County Jail for the last five years, died suddenly early today at his home, 1125 2nd St., Rensselaer. Mr. Coogan had worked at the jail, where he served as a guard at the main gate. He was 64. A native and lifelong resident of the City of Rensselaer, Mr. Coogan continued to be active despite the handicap of having lost a leg in a railroad accident a number of years ago. For the last several years he was Republican committeeman of the 1st District of the 6th Ward. He operated a restaurant at 1st St. and Harrison Ave. in Rensselaer for many years. Surviving are his widow, the former Agnes Teator of Rensselaer; six children, Mrs. Thomas Cox and John, James Jr., Edith, Shirley and William Coogan, all of Rensselaer; two sisters, Mrs. John Real of Albany and Mrs. John Whitbeck of Rensselaer; and two brothers, William Coogan and Edward Coogan of Rensselaer. The funeral will be held Thursday at 8:45 a.m. from the residence and 9:30 a.m. from St. John's Church, Rensselaer.
