She was born in Kannapolis, North Carolina on October 3, 1918 to Phyleckster and Susan Sain Willett. She graduated from Rockwell High School in Rockwell, North Carolina and joined the United States Army on June 29, 1943. She served as a stenographer in the Women's Army Corps until her honorable discharge in November 1945. She married John W. Coogan of Yonkers, New York on June 15, 1946 and lived in the state of New York for the next thirty seven years. She worked for Reader's Digest in Chappaqua, New York until her retirement in 1982. COOGAN [photo] KANNAPOLIS [near Charlotte, NC] - Frances Willett Coogan, 86, Roanoke, Va., a native of Kannapolis, died Sunday (April 3, 2005) at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke. Born Oct. 3, 1918, in Kannapolis, Mrs. Coogan, a daughter of the late Phyleckster and Susan Sain Willett, was a graduate of Rockwell High School. She joined the U.S. Army on June 29, 1943, serving as a stenographer in the Women's Army Corps. She was honorably discharged in November 1945. In 1982, she retired from Reader's Digest in Chappaqua, N.Y. She moved to China Grove the following year, where she was a member of First United Methodist Church. In 1999, she moved to Roanoke, where she briefly lived at Friendship Manor Retirement Community before moving in with her son, Dr. Peter F. Coogan. Her husband, John Coogan, preceded her in death. Other survivors include son Dr. John W. Coogan, East Lansing, Mich.; brothers James and Hal Willett; sisters Betty Willett Bollinger and Pat Willett Hall; and one granddaughter.
