COOGAN 1920 - 2011 FLORENCE - Felixa "Phyllis" Helen (Sieruta) Coogan, wife of Thomas J. Coogan died Saturday October 29, 2011 at home. She was born in Northampton, October 18, 1920, daughter of the late Frank and Helen (Janowska) Sieruta. She attended Hawley Grammar School and graduated from Northampton High School, class of 1938. She attended The Hudson City Hospital of Nursing receiving her nurse's diploma in 1941. The same year she received her Registered Nurse license from the State of New York. For a brief period she worked in Hudson, NY as a nurse. She also worked at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital for several years, and at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Leeds for 30 years, retiring in 1976. She was a communicate of the former Our Lady of the Annunciation Church in Florence. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Government Employees, Chapter 484 and of the Polish Genealogical Society of Massachusetts and the Northampton St. Patrick's Association. Besides her husband of Sixty Four years, she leaves a loving son and daughter-in-law, Thomas J. III and Nancy (Horan) Coogan of Storrs, CT, two grandchildren, Jillian (Farrelly) Morascini and her husband Anthony Morascini and James Farrelly, great grandson Anthony John Morascini all of Willington, CT. Surviving nieces and nephews include David and Nancy Sieruta of Green Cove Springs, FL, William and Mary Sieruta and Robert Sieruta of Leverett, Leo Vance of Chicopee, Lynn (Caulfield) and husband William Lak of Ware; Joan (Caulfield) and husband Don MacIver of South Hadley, and Lawrence and wife Ellen (Ames) of Lincoln, MA, and her caring Godson, Robert and his wife, Dianne Stackow of Westfield. Her brother, Zigmund, a petty officer aboard the USS Patterson during the battle of the Coral Islands was the first Northampton resident to be killed in action in WWII. Another brother , William died in 2001. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, genealogy research, and traveling. Graveside services will be held at the Sieruta plot in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Hatfield, immediatly following Liturgy of Christian Burial at Annunciation Chapel of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Florence on November 7, 2011 at 10AM. Relatives and friends may visit at Childs Funeral Home, 14 Kingsley Ave., Haydenville on Sunday November 6, 2011 from 3:00-8:00pm.
