Coogan, 21, of Kennewick, was driving eastbound on Highway 26 when he attempted to pass a semi-trailer at 4 p.m., according to a Washington State Patrol press release. His 1994 Honda Prelude hit a 1998 Dodge Caravan head-on. Coogan died at the crash site. The driver of the Dodge, Kelly J. Bell, 41, of Bothell, and her passenger, Savannah M. Thomas, 15, of Snohomish, were taken to East Adams Rural Hospital in Ritzville, where they were treated for injuries and released. Born Sept. 6, 1980, Coogan and his family moved to the Tri-Cities in 1997. He attended Southridge High School, from where he graduated in 1999. After graduation, Coogan attended Lower Columbia College in Longview, where he was a two-year starter for the men's baseball team. He earned his AA degree with a focus in business and computer and computer science in 2001. Coogan transferred to WSU in the 2001 fall semester and tried out for the baseball team. Though he was competitive by nature, Coogan was not bitter that he didn't make the team, said friend Alison Keck, a WSU senior. "He loved baseball with every bone in his body," said longtime friend Emily Rains, a junior at WSU. Keck attended LCC with Coogan and the two remained friends when they transferred to WSU. Coogan had a sense of humor not many could forget, she said. "He had such a sarcastic sense of humor, he could always make me laugh," Keck said. "If he had any dirt on anybody, he never let them forget it. He loved to hassle people." While attending LCC, Coogan and Keck would get together every Wednesday night and watch "Dawson's Creek," a ritual he was embarassed about until discovering that the rest of the baseball team also watched the show. Coogan was a friend that could always be counted on, Rains said. "Dave was someone everyone loved," she said. "He was the guy that if you needed anything, you just had to call him and he would be there; no questions asked." Coogan had a passion for technology, history, Egyptian art and the guitar. Coogan's parents and younger brother, Steve, live in Kennewick. A viewing will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union, Kennewick. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, 3700 W. 27 Ave., Kennewick. _____________________________________________________________________
