The raid occurred on the night of Monday 25th September 1916 when a single Zeppelin dropped 36 bombs in a line between Burngreave and through Attercliffe to Darnall. The Zeppelin in question was a German Naval Zeppelin L22 that was under the command of Kapitanleutenant Martin Dietrich... ... On Armistice Day 1922 a Memorial was unveiled outside the Baltic Works in Effingham Road, Sheffield. To quote: "the memorial was intended to perpetuate the infamy of the Germans as much as remember the dead" ... The first high explosive bomb fell on Danville Street, killing 49 year old Frederick Stratford, who was struck by shrapnel whilst in bed.
