http://www.cooganresearchgroup.com/crg/index.htm 21 October 2012 COOGAN story _____________________________________________________________________ appearing in "Trenton Daily True American" [NJ], 10 MAY 1880, PAGE 3: THOMAS COOGAN'S DROWNING Coroner's Inquest Coroner Murray held an inquest at the Court House on Saturday afternoon, on the body of Thomas Coogan, who was found drowned in the canal near the Hamilton avenue bridge on Friday night. The following is a synopsis of the testimony taken: Davis Murdock, testified that he worked at shoemaking and tending the bridge; he had the occasion to go behind the shanty about half-past six-o'clock on Friday night when he discovered the body of a man floating in the canal; he notified two men who were standing on the bridge and the two went to where the body was, and the witness procured a boat hook and conveyed it to shore. William Harle testified that he was standing on the bridge in conversation with Daniel Adams when they were notified by Mr. Murdock that a man was drowned; after looking at the body a little while went home. Daniel Adams corroborated the testimony of the former witness. John G. Runyan testified that on Monday night he was walking through Broad street, Chambersburg, when he came across the deceased, who was very much intoxicated; walked back with him about three hundred yards and then left him. Annie Carey testified that deceased was her uncle; that he never was married and that about nine years ago his sister died, when a woman named Flanagan came to his house, and he gave her permission to stay there; deceased had often told witness that he could not get clear of her (Mrs. Flanagan); deceased drank, but she never saw him drunk.
