NICHOLAS HOTEL, NEW YORK About seven o'clock yesterday morning, THOS. COOGAN, a porter employed in the St. Nicholas Hotel, was stabbed in the abdomen by THOMAS WHITE, receiving a wound which will probably prove mortal. WHITE, it appears, had made his way into the hotel at an early hour, and created some disturbance, quarrelling with some of the persons employed about the establishment. He was particularly abusive to COOGAN, and challenged him to come out upon the sidewalk and fight. About seven o'clock COOGEN [sic] went out to wash the sidewalk, as was his practice. WHITE was lurking about, and seeing him, drew a dirk, with a spring blade, which he opened, and attacking COOGAN, stabbed him in the abdomen. The assassin turned to flee and was pursued by several persons. Officer SCHOONMAKER was coming down the street in citizen's dress, and perceiving the excitement, seized upon WHITE, suspecting him to be the guilty party. He demanded his dagger, which WHITE refused to surrender, till threatened by a revolver. He was conveyed to the Fourteenth Precinct Station House to await examination. COOGAN was conveyed to a room in the hotel and a physician called, but his recovery is considered improbable. He is a member of the Sixty-ninth Regiment, and was engaged in the battle of Bull Run. ____________________________________________________________________ appearing in "Baltimore Sun" [MD], 12 NOV 1861: MURDER IN NEW YORK New York, Nov. 11 - Thomas F.
