Coogan, a brakeman in the employ of the West Shore railroad, living at No. 411 Elm street, died at the Emergency hospital at Buffalo at an early hour this morning as a result of injuries received while riding on the top of a freight train near that place yesterday afternoon. Mr. Coogan had been in the employ of the rail- road company for some years, running between this city and Buffalo. He left this city yesterday morning and had almost reached Buffalo when the accident which caused his death occurred. [photo; caption: PETER J. COOGAN] He was standing on top of a box car and failed to notice an overhead bridge which stood just ahead. The train was progressing at a fast rate of speed and his head struck the bridge with terrific force, throwing him from the car. He was picked up and hurried to the railroad Emergency hospital, where it was found that his skull was fractured. Cards in the man's pockets indicated that he lived in this city and his wife was communicated with and left for Buffalo last night. He was about 37 years old and besides his wife is survived by two daughters, Margaret and Katherine Coogan. The body will be brought to this city for burial. ______________________________________________________________________ appearing in "Arcadian Weekly Gazette", c.1906, PAGE ?: COOGAN, Peter J., Syracuse... source: "Arcadian Weekly Gazette Index of Deaths for Surnames A-M for March 28, 1899 to March 6, 1907" - PAGE 384 http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywayne/vitals/arcadgaz1.html ______________________________________________________________________
