Gwyn (Hardesty) Coogan 
   Born: August 21, 1965, Trenton, NJ
   Runner - 10,000m 32:08.77 (1994); Marathon 2:32:50 (1995) 

Coogan did not compete in track in high school; instead, she 
swam, played lacrosse, field hockey, and squash.  She made her 
debut in distance running when she went out for cross country at 
Smith College: "I wasn't looking for success when I went out for 
cross country.  Whatever it was that I was looking for, I found it, 
and that's why I'm still running."  In college, she won the NCAA 
Division III title at 3000 meters in 1985 and 1986 completed her 
Ph.D. in numbers theory at the University of Colorado in the summer 
of 1999.  Married distance runner Mark Coogan in 1990; two children,
Katrina (born 1993) and Margaret Gail (born November 12, 1998) 
She started running again two weeks after the birth of her last 
child.
