http://www.cooganresearchgroup.com/crg/index.htm 03 October 2011 COOGAN story ____________________________________________________________________ appearing in "Trenton State Gazette" [NJ], 01 NOV 1877: [...] A man named Coogan has been arrested at the Episcopal Hospital, Philadelphia, on suspicion of being the burglar who was shot on the night of the 18th instant by Mr. Joseph Potts, of Three [Tons], near Florence. Coogan has several gunshot wounds in the head. He was given in charge of a Burlington constable and conveyed to the County Jail. ____________________________________________________________________ appearing in "Brooklyn Daily Eagle" [NY], 24 NOV 1877: [...] James Oliver Coogan, a burglar, who has just died [NOTE - this later turned out to be incorrect!] in Bordentown, N.J., made a confession that he was on of a party of five men who attempted to murder and rob Joseph Potts, a deaf and dumb man, living three miles from that place. Coogan said that one of the party had been instantly killed by a shot from Potts, and buried in the woods near by. He named a person in Burlington, who had been one of the party, and the police at once arrested the man, who proved to be William Brotherton, a truck driver. The grave of the dead burglar is being searched for. ____________________________________________________________________
