Denver, March 14. - James Coogan, a well known light weight prize fighter and brother of "Reddy" Coogan of this city and Aspen, was shot and instantly killed by Frank, better known as "Plunk" Salter this morning. Salter was arrested while on his way to jail to give himself up and is now in that bastile under a charge of murder. The shooting occurred in the saloon of William Rogers. Salter and Coogan bore no love for each other and it is said that they had been quarreling over a woman of the town. Salter was in the saloon sitting in a chair tilted back against the wall. Coogan entered and walking toward him began to call him names. At last he drew a revolver and threatened to blow Salter's head off. Friends of both men interfered and prevented trouble. Salter went out the back door and Coogan went out the front entrance. In a few minutes both came back and Coogan again called Salter names and Salter says that he put his hand in his coat pocket. Salter rushed behind the bar and picking up a revolver which was lying there fired at Coogan who dropped to the floor. Salter walked coolly out and started for the jail to give himself up. He stopped at a number of saloons and took a drink at each place and in one of these he was arrested by the officers who were in search of him. The shot called the attention of an officer near the Rogers saloon and he hastened there to find Salter gone and Coogan breathing his last. The ball from the revolver had gone through his temple and he did not live more than five minutes. "Plunk" Salter was arrested recently on the charge of conspiracy to kill Webber and was out on bail at the time the tragedy occurred. ____________________________________________________________________ appearing in "Colorado Springs Gazette" [CO], 15 MAR 1901: JIMMY COOGAN ... http://ppld.org ____________________________________________________________________ appearing in "Salt Lake Herald" [UT], 15 MAR 1901: PUGILIST KILLED IN DENVER Shot Through the Head by "Plunk" Salter.
