Research:

This is one of the Coogan families of Shankill (or Shankelle), 
Parish Kilkerrin (or Kilkerran), County Galway.  They lived in 
the vicinity of Tuam and Moylough townlands.

Two members of this group, Martin Coogan and Bridget Coogan 
Tansey, emigrated to the United States in the mid Nineteenth 
Century.  Both initially settled in Louisiana.  Several years
later, Martin moved north - presumably to Illinois - and Bridget
moved to St. Louis, Missouri.

Family stories hint of family connections with Mobile, Alabama.

This family is probably related to the other families from 
Shankill.
