He was born in Ireland and emigrated to the United States in the early Nineteenth Century. He initially settled in New York City, New York, where he kept a liquor saloon for several years in the mid 1840s. After Peter's wife died (c.1845), he placed his young son in the care of relatives and joined the Army, fighting in the Mexican War (1846-1848). When he returned to New York, his child had vanished. Meanwhile, his son was being raised by the Cleary family of Great Bend, New York. The caretakers, who may have had ulterior motives for hiding the child's identity, led young "Frank Cleary" to believe he was their own child. However, a family quarrel (involving his purported brother and father) exposed the family secret around 1863. For the next two decades, Frank searched for his family to determine how he came to be lost. In 1880, he finally connected with Peter and disbelieving (actual) relatives. We are currently looking for someone to link with this family and to take over the search! ******************** 01. [ male01 ] COOGAN Children of [ male01 ] Coogan: 02.
