Research:

This is the family of John Coogan.  He was probably born in 
Ireland and emigrated to the United States in the mid Nineteenth 
Century.  He settled in Charleston, South Carolina.  John was
(apparently) a policeman during the siege of Charleston (during 
the US Civil War).  When he was killed (see CRG "Coogan News
Stories") in 1864, he left behind a widow (Catherine) and a 
young son. 

John's son, John James Coogan, also died young - but not before 
he fathered three children.  His widow, Cordelia Bridget Quinn, 
later took the family to New York City. The family actually grew
in later years, augmented by descendants from her marriage to
James Farrell.

There is another potential male member of this group: a Thomas E.
Coogan was living with Catherine Coogan and her son, John Coogan, 
in 1882.

This family has also been found as COGAN and CROGHAN.  It appears
they were known as COGAN for part of the time in Charleston and
began (resumed ?) using COOGAN in New York.
