The family has roots in the "south of Ireland" before moving to Galway in the late Eighteenth Century. The first descendant to venture out of Ireland (Patrick J. Coogan), emigrated to the United States in the early Nineteenth Century and fought in the War of 1812. A very prominent later descendant was Patrick J. Coogan, the former's grand nephew. He was born in Ballinasloe and moved to the United States around 1839. It is not yet known where he settled, but he joined the US Army during the Mexican War, serving in the highly successful campaigns to take Mexico City. After a few years in Florida "among the Indians," Patrick decided to move West to join relatives. However, he became gravely ill while living in Atlanta, Georgia, and was directed by doctors to return to the coast. He settled in Charleston, South Carolina, where he ran a bar and restaurant. Patrick owned a 10 year old male slave in 1860 and appeared in the slave schedules for that year. He remained in the city through the US Civil War - except when forced to leave (1864) due to his pre-War, pro-Union views. When the War ended, Patrick's courage and selfless support for the Union were the source of widespread public admiration, leading to his election as delegate to the Reconstruction Era South Carolina Legislature. Both Patrick and his son, John Lynas Coogan, had business connections in New York City. One of Patrick's brothers, Bernard Coogan, came to visit him in Charleston in early 1861. Once the US Civil War began, Bernard attempted to escape Charleston aboard the "H. Middleton" but was intercepted by the Union Blockade in September of 1861. What we know of Bernard is from the official Union Navy correspondence. This family has also been found as COGAN.
